Description

In the body of literature on advocacy in counseling it has been suggested that one of the struggles professionals have is not advocating for the profession before clients. Without advocating for the profession first, clients cannot be informed of the services that could be provided to them by counselors. Literature also indicates that the word “advocacy” is most commonly used in conjunction with the work “leadership.” With over 48,000 American Counseling Association (ACA) members it is impossible for there to be enough leadership positions to equate to the number of advocates to support such a large quantity of professionals. To uncover the advocacy-related perceptions of ACA members in non-leadership roles a national investigation was conducted with the support of a CARS FLRG grant. Attendees of this presentation will learn about the challenges facing this helping profession, the research investigation, and what implications for future practices the study uncovered.
