Abstract

The purpose of public education in the U.S. is to prepare students for active citizenship in a democracy and in the world. At present, neither the workings of their own country nor the workings of the world are comprehensible without a strong knowledge of Asia and college is too late to start building that understanding.

For the last twenty-four years, Primary Source, an educational non-profit focusing on K-12 global education has been offering face-to-face courses and study tours, first to East Asia and gradually expanding to all of Asia and the world. In the last decade source books, online courses, online curriculum, and webinars have been added to the mix. In addition to NCLC, Primary Source, SPICE and other older organizations like Visualizing Cultures, the Confucius Institutes, Educators for Teaching about India, 100K Strong Initiative have emerged and are contributing to the study of Asian and its languages.

In this roundtable, Primary Source will introduce some of its newest work like the revised source book China Since 1644 and online courses and resources. We also will briefly present some works from other that we have found particularly helpful and show how to use our webliographies to find more resources.

Our goal is to familiarize Asian educators with resources so that they can revitalize their courses and promote the study of Asia and Asian languages. We hope that all will discuss how K-12 education and collegiate education about Asia can better interface and how the Asian studies community can continue to be communally supportive and promote Asia in our curriculum.
