Event Title

Lightning Round: The Power of Practice: Using Mixed-Reality Simulation to Prepare Teacher Candidates for Parent-Teacher Conferences

Location

Moakley Auditorium

Start Time

10-5-2018 1:50 PM

End Time

10-5-2018 3:00 PM

Description

Teacher candidates have limited time in their preparation programs to acquire and demonstrate the skills necessary to be fully prepared for the many roles expected of teachers. In addition to implementing effective teaching practices, teachers are expected to conduct parent-teacher conferences to effectively communicate with parents' information regarding their child’s academic achievement and school behavior. Although teacher candidates may learn the theory behind how to conduct effective parent-teacher conferences, it is difficult for program faculty to provide authentic experiences for teacher candidates to practice conducting these conferences. Our goal is to examine an alternative possibility, mixed-reality simulations. Candidates will answer a survey before their mixed-reality experience and after participating in a live parent-teacher conference. Candidates will facilitate a parent-teacher conference with mixed-reality simulation avatars during which they will build rapport with parents, convey academic achievement, and discuss the child’s school behavior.
