Description

University faculty collaborated with classroom teachers from a local elementary school with a student body comprising nearly 50% English learners to support EL through the use of high quality iPad apps and the hands-on interactive Osmo technology. The technologies were purchased through a small grant focused on STEM learning. Our goal was to use the technologies strategically to make science learning accessible, engaging and developmentally appropriate for 4th and 5th graders who are reading English at grades 1-2 levels. In conjunction with science learning, we sought to create effective opportunities for students to build science vocabulary and background knowledge to strengthen their ability to access content through reading and in their integrated classrooms. We will share successes in teacher training and student learning as well as lessons we learned throughout this process.
