Description

Teaching music fundamentals within a general education music course can be an exercise in frustration with limited results. Teaching musical concepts would be easier if students could learn to play an instrument, but that takes more time and instruction than is generally available, particularly if one assumes that the instrument must be a standard orchestral instrument and that proficiency is required. A simple instrument such as the ukulele can quickly provide an enjoyable learning platform for students who might otherwise be excluded and accelerate and concretize learning. I describe several examples of how I use ukuleles—perceived as approachable, accessible, and affordable—to create active learning opportunities, helping students to create an understanding of musical concepts in the general education classroom. This presentation will include a live demonstration in which participants learn musical concepts through playing the ukulele. No musical experience is necessary; instruments will be provided.
