Location

Description

Studies on workplace and well-being, most notably Randy Hodson’s Dignity at Work (2001) show that when, where, and how work is completed has an impact on the commitment, creativity, and effort of workers. Part-time faculty, whose ability to work is organized by the needs of departments have even less ability to control their work environment. From 2014-2016, we investigated the work-life of BSU part-time (PT) faculty in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Social Science fields to better understand their experiences. Through surveys and qualitative interviews, we find that part-time faculty differ in their needs but have a shared interest in providing input into their departments, integrating into the university culture and engaging with students beyond the classroom. This presentation will outline the different groups of PT faculty at BSU and propose ways to better support their work lives, give them a voice, and provide dignity at work.
