Description

The ACFI department implemented a Peer Assisted Learning program to assist students in ACFI100 introductory accounting to develop the accounting skills required to succeed in upper-level business courses. Three main objectives were developed: (1) to improve understanding and command of accounting terminology; (2) to improve quantitative skills; and (3) to improve spreadsheet utilization skills. ACFI Peer Leaders are students who have successfully completed various accounting courses and have a strong command of accounting terminology and Excel spreadsheet functionality. During weekly one-hour sessions, peer leaders work with small groups of students to assist them in completing weekly Excel based accounting assignments. Using peer leaders has been shown to elicit more questions and better learning outcomes than having a faculty member lead the same small group activities. The ACFI coordinators will share their experience in co-leading this program and explain the benefits that have inured to both ACFI students and peer leaders.
