Event Title

Plenary 1: Importance of Workplace Flexibility at Bridgewater State University: What's Next?

Location

Moakley Auditorium

Start Time

12-5-2016 9:00 AM

End Time

12-5-2016 10:00 AM

Description

With National Science Foundation ADVANCE funding, we investigated:

  1. Opportunities for workplace flexibility (both generally and in relation to family leave) and their impact on women in STEM and Social Sciences at BSU,
  2. How BSU can better understand and support faculty who achieve workplace flexibility through working part-time.

Data collected from full-time faculty surveys (n=76) and interviews (n=49) indicated that full-time faculty generally felt they had somewhat less flexibility than they needed, with differences by gender, discipline, and tenure status. Data collected from part-time faculty surveys (n=75) and interviews (n=29) indicated that part-time faculty come to BSU with diverse experiences and motivations, yet they face numerous challenges in the form of lack of support and resources. In this session, we will share more of our findings and collect ideas to inform our future conversations about how to improve workplace flexibility for all faculty at teaching-intensive institutions.
