Description

Effective diversity practices in higher education are critical components to closing achievement gaps and increasing graduation rates for majority students and those from under-represented groups (Bauman, Bustillos, Bensimon, Brown & Bartee, 2005; Williams, 2013). In addition, utilizing diversity best practices in hiring, employee retention and professional development helps ensure a more diverse workforce equipped to support the success of our diversifying student bodies (Anderson, 2008; Williams, 2013). In acknowledgement of the importance of effective diversity practices, faculty from Business Management, Elementary Education, English, Social Work, and the Part-time Faculty Coordinator have worked together this year with the Office of Institutional Diversity to create departmental diversity action plans. In this roundtable discussion, we will share our process in developing our diversity committees and plans. Attendees will be invited to share ideas for developing plans in their departments and to discuss challenges and rewards of this work.
