Description

I would like to present facets of my research funded through last year's FLRG grant on the intersection of movement and text. The research compared works by two nationally recognized choreographers: Bill T. Jones and Liz Lerman. Although the essay considered an array of relationships between movement and text, I would like to focus my talk on two primary areas of interest; how the choreographers negotiated the balance of listening and watching, and how they engaged structural components in each medium to layer thematic content into an artistic work that was greater than these two components. The presentation includes guided video viewing and discussion/examples of how these mediums interact. Because of the complexity of the topic I will limit examples to Jones’ work on Lincoln as I found it particularly poetic and moving, and select sections of the piece conducive to a thirty minute presentation.
