Description

In 2012, BSU forged a partnership with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to provide professional development experiences for BPS teachers in schools with a high concentration of students from the Republic of Cape Verde. While many of these teachers’ students are first generation Cape Verdean Americans, many others are newly arrived in the U.S., some arrive just a week before entering school. Concerned with understanding the cultural and educational backgrounds of these students, especially in light of internal philosophies aimed at maximizing learning for all children, BPS approached BSU for collaboration around these issues. For 2013, this partnership produced a workshop for BPS teachers on literacy practices and reading attitudes in Cape Verde, and a supervised BSU/BPS Heritage Tour to Cape Verde, held during BPS teachers’ April Vacation. This seminar will present responses to that literacy workshop, results of the Heritage Tour and the importance of this new initiative.
