Description

Dr. Rebecca Metcalf will describe a program she has developed which aims to mentor new mathematics faculty on how to be outstanding advisors. This comprehensive approach includes materials that assist advisors in reflecting upon their current knowledge, tracking student progress and maintaining accurate advising session notes as well as other material specialized to the most common student needs. While developed for the mathematics department, these resources could easily be modified for your department and students. Dr. Jennifer Mendell will share how the NSF-STREAMS grant has changed the culture of advising transfer students in the College of Science and Mathematics. Initiatives to enhance the quality of transfer student advising include establishing closer connections at the local community colleges to ensure effective advising, the creation of a Science and Math Transfer Working group at both BSU and local community colleges, and the development of expertise in transfer student advisors within departments.
