Description

As BSC graduate education has expanded, the educational needs of graduate students have become more clearly defined. Issues of equity are similar to those in undergraduate education that are being addressed by Project Compass. The Social Work Department found that some graduate students from the same identified student groups may not initially possess academic skills appropriate to graduate level education, jeopardizing their academic success. The MSW program partnered with the Center for Teaching & Learning, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Program, and Academic Advising Center to pilot a graduate writing fellows (GWFs) program. The GWFs received training from the WAC coordinator in coaching students to improve their writing skills. The MSW GWF program can be used as a model for other BSC graduate programs. This presentation will focus on the reasons for this program, program training elements, the MSW GWF proposal, and initial impressions concerning the effectiveness of the GWF program.
