Description

This presentation is based on Lee Bolman and Terrance Deal’s “Leadership Orientations” instrument designed to assess a leader’s perceived application of the four frames of leadership presented as a theoretical structure. In this pilot study, we administered the Bolman and Deal instrument to higher education administrators at Bridgewater State College. The leadership frames instrument was distributed to 146 middle and upper level administrative leaders, including faculty members coordinating programs and thus serving in administrative positions at the college. Based on 59 responses, the human resource frame was revealed as the one used most extensively. However, this finding was not at a level of statistical significance and was closely followed by utilization of the structural frame. In addition, there were no significant differences in the perceived use of the frames among these leaders when analyzed demographically regarding gender and years of service at the college.
