Description

Recent evidence points to the principal internship as a weak component in university educational administration programs. As such, my graduate research assistant and I have been examining the importance of the BSC principal field experience (practicum). Our methods include surveys of current BSC students enrolled in the practicum and those who graduated within the past three years, an interview with the Practicum Coordinator, attendance at practicum meetings and online interviews with respondents. We also plan to review documents and literature regarding the principal internship. Our findings suggest that the on site field experience itself is important to interns; that the BSC supervisor is not highly valued; and that sites are selected according to where the BSC student is employed. Some preliminary implications of our study are to create an advisory board of high powered BSC alumni to mentor and strengthen their ties with employers who can supply coveted internships and strengthen the connection between theory and practice during the practicum.
