Project Description/Abstract

For the past two years I have assisted the Humpback Whale Ethogram Project conducted by BSC’s Biological Sciences Department. This collaboration has inspired me to better understand these enormous and complex creatures and to incorporate them in my artwork. The multisensory video-and-sound installation will celebrate their beauty, humor, and spontaneity while reflecting on their imminent extinction and their impact on historic industries that had developed around them.

Whaling was once an economic and cultural mainstay in the everyday life of Rhode Island and Massachusetts communities, in this spirit, the art exhibition will travel from Providence, RI to Cape Verde, Portugal, The Azores, and back to Bridgewater, MA. The goal of this project is the confluence of multiple disciplines, reconnecting communities of different cultural backgrounds, and generating new art-viewing audiences.

This project is possible by the generous support of the Center for the Advancement of Research & Teaching (CART) by its Faculty & Librarian Research Grant (FLRG) at Bridgewater State College and The Project Grant by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA).
