As the cement of digital environments hardens, culture looks to find ways to effectively make the virtual connection. In education, the most obvious place has been teaching and learning. The online class and blended class have become staples of the college landscape and continue to grow in the K-12 world. The problem exists in the way in which the online class has manifested. In many cases the very thing that defines a classroom has been eliminated - the classroom; and replaced with ... nothing. The better educators see this and seek to solve it before it becomes the classic structure of online teaching. In 2011, I began using Etherpad as a solution to the need for the online “classroom” to be part of online and blended learning. While there are other resources, none have proved as beneficial, simple, and reliable as Etherpad. Combined with a free conference call, it has proven an effective and powerful way for the group to meet and interact.
