Collaborative Teaching with Archival Materials: Learning about Normal School Graduates of Framingham State University

Colleen Previte, Framingham State University

Abstract

During our presentation we will share materials about our collaborative teaching in the University archives during which we provide Education students with an introduction to normal school history, as well as information related to normal school graduates from Framingham. Currently we highlight six individuals: Horace Mann – the founder of the normal school movement and first Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education; Mary Swift – first graduate of Lexington Normal School and teacher of the blind and deaf at the Perkins Institution; Jennie Howard – 1866 graduate and teacher in Argentina where she also assisted with the start of the normal schools; Olivia Davidson - 1881 graduate, teacher at the Tuskegee Normal School and later Booker T. Washington’s second wife; Bertha Johnston – 1885 graduate, writer and an advocate for kindergartens in the United States; and Edith Fay – 1905 graduate. During this presentation we will share our approach to this collaborative effort and our assessment of it. We’ll also share materials we are in the process of developing. In the future we hope to teach about additional normal school graduates including Rebecca Pennell - 1840 graduate and the first woman professor at a United States college; Annie Dawson – 1891 graduate and teacher of the Sioux tribes; and Corinna Shattuck 1871 graduate and missionary in Turkey.
